You misunderstood what I meant. I was not implying

that Arkansas had no history as an athletic program. I am well familiar with Arkansas's rich history in the SWC. I was trying to state that Arkansas and South Carolina did not have a long history with the 10 SEC schools prior to joining the conference. I mistakenly assumed you would get the gest of the point since this portion of the thread was clearly talking about relationships between schools.
After all you did state that Penn State didn't want to have anything to do with certain schools. In part because Penn State didn't have any real history with those schools and made it easier for Penn State to assume it had nothing to gain by developing a relationship with those schools.

You clearly missed the point of the speculation. As I have clearly stated multiple times Penn State and Temple were looking to create an all-sports eastern conference. While some of the schools may have been primarily concern about their football interests, it is safe to assume that some of 7 schools (i.e. Syracuse and Temple) would also want to make sure this new conference addressed their interest in basketball and the other sports. It is unlikely this conference would be content to be a 1 or 2 bid team for the NCAAT especially if the conference started out as 12 members. The addition of FSU and Miami would address the football and baseball interests, but do nothing for basketball. Since there are 3 vacant spots to fill, I don't think it is unreasonable to assume that the conference would consider filling those spots with schools that would help strengthen the conference's basketball reputation while still allowing the conference to play a CCG. One reason Arkansas was so attractive to the SEC is it was good in both basketball and football. SEC basketball had really become Kentucky + 9 and Arkansas gave the SEC a second power program (or so it thought).

You are right that was the discussion of the day which is why Kramer is such a visionary and helped catapult the SEC to the forefront. Since the ACC is the only eastern conference and it is unlikely this new eastern conference would be able to lure any ACC schools away, then the conference would need a visionary commissioner to show those 7 schools how beneficial a 12-member conference could be and how easily it could be created by picking schools from the 20+ Independent football programs
